Moissanite
Lab-grown and hand-set. Its refractive index runs higher than a diamond, which is why it throws colour under a lamp instead of just sparkling.
Mother of pearl
Cut from shell, so the grain never repeats. Two of the same piece will not match each other — that is the point of it.
18k gold over steel
A gold layer over 316L surgical steel. The steel is why it survives a shower; the gold is why it does not read as steel.
